Four options for North Commons Park concept plans

Everyone’s invited to review and comment on four preliminary concept plans for North Commons Park. Released in mid-January by the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB), the plans show options for transforming North Commons Park facilities into a Northside hub for arts, recreation, athletics and a host of community activities. They’ve been in development since last summer, and are guided by the MPRB North Service Area Master Plan, as well as a broad range of community engagements.

Four concept plans, five key points

*The focus is the park’s northeast quarter, from the existing community center to Golden Valley Road.

*They fulfill the master plan and guiding principles for North Commons Park, while transforming the park in fresh and exciting ways.

*They include the City’s largest community center by far, at 52,000 to 58,000 square feet.

*A fieldhouse – a large, flexible indoor space for athletics and tournaments, and many other types of events – will be the only building of its kind in the park system.

*Concepts 1 and 2 transform, renew and expand the existing community center and water park; Concepts 3 and 4 are all-new construction.
