The MSP Film Society, in partnership with the Capri and the Minnesota Historical Society, presents a landmark of American and African-American cinema, Nothing But A Man, at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 7 at the newly renovated Capri Theater, 2027 West Broadway.
Nothing But a Man follows rail worker Duff Anderson (Ivan Dixon) who’s left his 4-year-old son with a nanny, and now drifts through life with little ambition. Duff’s outlook on life changes when he meets schoolteacher Josie Dawson (Abbey Lincoln), a gentle preacher’s daughter. Although Josie’s father (Stanley Greene) disapproves of Duff’s lifestyle, the two eventually marry. Duff and Josie struggle to hold on to their marriage as Duff must face up to the oppressive racism of 1960s America.
This 1964 Civil Rights-era film, directed by Michael Roehmer, was selected for preservation in the U.S. National Film Registry. Screenwriter David Grant and MSP Film’s Craig Rice lead the post-screening community conversation after the movie.

Ample free parking is available in the lot just west of the Capri.
And mark your calendars for the 41st annual Minneapolis St. Paul International Film Festival, May 5-19. This year’s festival features a multi-film salute to Gordon Parks including the May 12 screening of Shaft at the Capri. All films for the festival will be announced on April 14.
