American Skin is a drama about an Iraq War veteran who demands justice on his own terms after his unarmed son is killed by police during a routine traffic stop. “I booked this film because it presents a different take on what we’re going through with police killings,” said Craig Laurence Rice, MSP Film Programmer and curator of the First Thursdays film series. “It’s a story of how injustice creates tension; how tension can create desperate people, and how desperate people can turn into dangerous people.”
Variety calls the film “Tense, bold, angry, empathetic, provocative, observant, and morally engaged,” a description that suggests a compelling First Thursdayspost-film discussion, a hallmark of this film series.
D.A. Bullock, an award-winning filmmaker and social practice artist in the field of story-based community organizing, leads that conversation.
First Thursday Films @ the Capri continues with The Personal History of David Copperfield, a modern take on Charles Dickens’ classic tale, on Thursday, December 2, followed by the animated, Oscar award-winning Soul, directed by Minnesotan Pete Docter, on Thursday, January 6. The schedule for the rest of the season will be posted soon.
Topical and relevant in these turbulent times, First Thursday Films aims to create a space for dialogue and better understanding. Come for the movies. Stay for the conversation. More info: thecapri.org, mspfilm.org, mnhs.org.
