Get schooling in music

The Minneapolis School of New Music (MSNM) is a new tuition-free, public charter school  in Camden to provide opportunity, access and motivation through music-immersion education to Northside kids.

The music-immersion middle school is currently enrolling for grades 6-8 for the 2021-2022 school year. To celebrate the opening and encourage enrollment, the school is hosting a RockEnRollment Block Party featuring a live outdoor concert, food and face-painting in the school parking lot (4021 N Thomas) on Saturday, June 26.

The line-up features some of Minneapolis’ top performers as well as nationally known DJ Sophia Eris, touring DJ for Lizzo, and hip-hop artist DJ KEEZY. Both DJs are the owners of Auntie’s Venue, a Black women-owned music venue that amplifies BIPOC and LBGTQIA+ artists. In addition, Boricua singer and songwriter Maria Isa, the three-piece band Gully Boys and hip-hop artist Nur-D will be performing.

The concert and block party will take place on June 26 from noon to 4 p.m. in the parking lot of Minneapolis School of New Music, on Upton Ave. Admission is free for children 14 and under, and a $10 donation is recommended for adults.

There is no other school in Minnesota like MSNM that focuses on composing new music, the recording arts and learning musical disciplines including singing, rapping, deejaying, electronic music, guitar, bass guitar, drums, piano, violin, cello, brass instruments, woodwinds and more. MSNM students will receive free music lessons, studio training, and unlimited access to opportunities in music and the arts throughout the Twin Cities.
