Snow Season is here!
Sidewalks are a critical part of our city’s transportation system. That’s why Minneapolis ordinance requires that property owners clear sidewalks after a snowfall within 24 hours for houses and duplexes, and four daytime hours for apartment and commercial buildings. For your own benefit and to help your neighbors who are walking, pushing strollers and using wheelchairs, please do your part. When you shovel snow and clear ice, shovel the sidewalks on all sides of your property, the full width of the sidewalk down to the bare pavement. Ice can be more of a barrier and more dangerous than snow. The City offers several sites where residents can pick-up FREE SAND for their residential sidewalks. Locations are open 24-hours-a-day, call 311 for location information. Please bring your own pail and shovel. If you use salt or other chemical de-icers, use as little as possible. When they dissolve, they release harmful chlorides that may find their way into the closest lake, river or stream.
To report a sidewalk that is not shoveled, you can file an online complaint, call 311 or use the 311 mobile app. If the City of Minneapolis gets a report or discovers that a sidewalk is not properly cleared, Public Works will send a warning letter and give the property owners a chance to clear it. If the sidewalk does not get cleared, the property owner may be issued a citation with a fine and crews will remove the snow and ice from the sidewalk. The property owner will be billed for this work, and unpaid bills will be added to the owner’s property tax.
Snow Emergencies are declared whenever there’s enough snowfall to warrant a complete plowing of city streets. There are a number of ways to learn when Snow Emergencies are in effect and what to do. Sign up for alerts on the City’s website minneapolismn.gov/snow — you can select to receive phone alerts, email or text alerts and also find information on downloading the Snow Emergency app available for Android and iPhones. Stay informed and avoid tickets and tows by following the parking restrictions. Residents can also always call 311 for information as well.
Holiday on 44th
Holiday on 44th will be celebrating its 19th year this year and the festivities will take place on Friday, December 2 from 6 – 9 p.m. at various locations along 44th Ave N. From music and crafts at Patrick Henry High School to face painters and magicians at Loring Community School, the street sparkles with cheer. Horse-drawn wagons provide transportation between locations, giving the celebration a friendly and old-fashioned atmosphere. Music, magicians, fire jugglers, chestnut roasting and a fantastic craft fair make up a small portion of this diverse and exciting event that draws attendance from all over the metro area.
