City Trees Manager Sydney Schaaf says, “Buying a tree at a nursery can cost up to $200. So, take advantage of this opportunity to enter the lottery, you could save more than $500 if you purchase three trees for $30 each. Don’t miss this opportunity to grow a tree and make a lasting impact on Minneapolis!”
Trees offer environmental, economic and mental health benefits. Planting trees can: save you money on utility bills; shade and cool your property; connect us to our neighborhood roots; collect stormwater runoff; provide habitat for wildlife; improve our health and well-being; and increase property values
Since 2006, the City has funded the City Trees program, offering an affordable way for community members to increase the tree canopy on private properties. Over the past 19 years, the program has provided more than 28,000 low-cost trees for planting on private residential properties. In 2024 alone, 3,080 trees were distributed, 1,468 more than in 2023.
