Free sand for sidewalks

You can get free sand to spread on your snow-packed or icy sidewalk or driveway. After you clear your sidewalks, spreading sand helps to provide traction. It also helps hard-packed snow or ice melt faster. Using plain salt is bad for the environment; salt is a major concern for all bodies of water and plants. Learn the best practices for using de-icing salt. Find basic info on this and more at minneapolismn.gov/getting-around/snow/snow-clearing/sidewalk-sand/. The City’s free sand does include some salt to the sand to prevent freezing. The ratio is up to 25 percent salt and 75 percent or more sand.

The Northside site for free sand is at 2710 Pacific St. (outside the main Public Works gate between 27th and 28th Aves. N.) Open 24 hours a day. The free sand is for Minneapolis residents only. You’re limited to one five-gallon bucket. You must bring your own pail and shovel.
