Glee!, movies, music, and more
written by Mike Mullen
You’d never believe it based on the weather, but it’s almost time to pick out a pumpkin and figure out a Halloween costume. Rest assured, summer has come and gone, and it’s time to lean into the Capri’s fall schedule of events for adults, families and children.
This month’s first event comes on October 3, with a showing of the film The Last Supper as part of our First Thursday Films @ the Capri series. The 1976 film set in Cuba depicts a clueless wealthy man attempting to recreate the Biblical “Last Supper” with 12 of his slaves. His actions don’t match his words, and the story soon descends into a familiar chaos. Stay after the film for a discussion with University of Minnesota professor August Nimtz.
First Thursday Films on November 7 features A Thousand and One, a 2023 film starring Teyana Taylor as a mother who decides to kidnap her son out of the New York City foster care system to raise him herself. Neda Renee Kellogg of Project Diva leads the conversation after the film.
First Thursday films start at 7 p.m., and entrance is free for Northside residents; others can obtain $5 tickets at mspfilm.org.
The Capri Glee! Adult Community Choir returns for rehearsals from 7-8:30 p.m. on Tuesdays, beginning on October 8. Register online at thecapri.org. Choir practice, led by J.D. Steele and Fred Steele, will build toward a fall concert at 7 p.m., Tuesday, November 5. Participation is free to everyone, age 18+.
The October edition of Camp Capri S3, where talented teaching artists guide middle school scholars through the wonderful world of the arts, will be led by the illustrator and muralist Briauna “Briinoir” Williams. Youth in grades 5-8 are invited to attend Camp Capri from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, October 19. On November 16, artist and educator Kenneth Caldwell will lead the session. Camp Capri S3 is free, and lunch – and a lot of fun – will be served. Registration required at thecapri.org.
On November 8, the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra kicks off its 2024-25 “Northside Series” with a performance of works by Jerod Tate, Valerie Coleman and Beethoven. Tickets are free for Northsiders and children (reservations are required at thespco.org – enter your zipcode as the promo code); reserved seating tickets $16-$36 for non-Northside adults. More info at thespco.org.
In the second installment of this year’s Legends @ the Capri, singing group CoMingL will play a tribute concert featuring the music of Lionel Richie. On November 14-15 (7-9 p.m.), “All Night Long” will feature the trio of g’Beau, William Wesley and Kelz, backed by a so-tight seven-piece band. Tickets $25, $30 at the door, $20 each for groups of 10 or more available at thecapri.org.
Rental events this month start on October 5 with “Youth Summit: Supporting Wellness & Connection,” a coalition-led gathering to provide space and resources for youth and families. The summit features a panel discussion, food and giveaways, plus a keynote speech by musician Lewiee Blaze. Entrance free, registration required at thecapri.org.
Later in the month, director Marcela Lorca and Ten Thousand Things will stage Helen, a send-up of the classic Trojan War tale, for a series of primetime and matinee performances. The play features a strong line-up and music by J.D. Steele. Staging times: 7:30-9 p.m. on October 18, 24, 25, 26; 2-3:30 p.m. on October 19, 20 and 26. (October 17 show is sold out). Tickets are “Pay What You Can,” ($40 recommended) and are on sale at tenthousandthings.org.
And on October 19, a performance of ANGRY BLACK WOMEN & Well Intentioned White Woman: A Conversation Play will challenge its audience to consider and converse on topics surrounding race, gender and society. Following the play, attendees are invited to stay for discussion groups. Runtime 1-2:15 p.m., discussion 2:30-4 p.m. Suggested donation $20.
