Gratitude and great deals

Legends @ the Capri is back for Season 15

Written by Mike Mullen

Let’s start with a note of gratitude: To those who contributed to our “Stand Together With Us” fundraising campaign of recent months, everyone affiliated with the Capri and PCYC offers our deepest thanks. It is only with the support of the community, its organizations, its leaders and its residents that we keep our doors open and lights on.

And to that end, we’ve got highlights to pencil (or pen) into your long-term calendars, some occurring this summer, others stretching all the way through spring of next year.

That starts with the announcement of our 15th season of Legends @ the Capri and the offer of season passes, on sale now, and individual concert tickets, which go on sale July 1. The 2024-25 lineup kicks off on September 14-15 with “Miles to Go in Old Orleans,” with local jazz talents Omar Abdulrakim and Solomon Parham staging a celebration of icons Miles Davis and Louis Armstrong.

On November 9 and 10, enjoy the sounds of soul ensemble CoMingL, comprised of singers Kelz, Gregory Washington and William Wesley, plus a seven-piece backing band in a “Legends Rewind” performance. After the holidays, the Capri welcomes singers Monique Blakey and Kijana Gant for “A Whole New World (A Soulful Tribute to Disney Classics),” on February 8-9.

On April 5 and 6, we’re taking it back to the band that kicked off the inaugural Legends @ the Capri series a decade and a half ago, the Wolverines Jazz Trio, together with vocalists Judy Vinar and Dennis Spears. And last but not least, “Arias in Paradise” features singers Alannah Garnier, Anna Hashizume, Ann Michaels and Josh Edem, on June 5-8 in the Paradise @ the Capri. From classical music to musical theater, this intimate tribute has something for everyone.

Season passes to all five concerts are $100 (save $25) or $200 for “Star Season Passes,” that include a $100 contribution to Capri arts programs including the Capri Youth Apprentices. Order online at thecapri.org, or contact Jordan Flaherty at 612-643-2040, 763-260-4415 or at jflaherty@pcyc-mpls.org.

On Monday July 8, 25 middle school-age scholars start their Summer Camp Capri experience of five weeks of art-full learning, fun, and making friends at the Capri. Camp culminates in their performance of the musical Into the Woods Jr. at 5 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday, August 7 and 8. The shows are free to attend, but registration for tickets is required beginning July 22.

Register for the fall session of the Capri Glee! Adult Community Choir begins Monday, July 1 online at thecapri.org. Rehearsals will be held Tuesdays from 7-8:30 p.m., October 8 through November 5, with the fall concert at 7 p.m., Tuesday, November 12.  Participation is free to everyone, age 18+.

PCYC is seeking guest readers for the Bright Futures Summer Freedom School. Readers are needed from 8:45-9:15 a.m. Monday-Friday (June 24 to August 2) at PCYC, 2210 Oliver Avenue N. Register to be a guest reader online at pcyc-mpls.org or contact Andrew Hopkins at ahopkins@pcyc-mpls.org or 612-743-2508 or Ellese Ford, eford@pcyc-mpls.org or 612-643-2023.
