In 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation which designated May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which that date falls as Police Week.
The Minneapolis Police Department (MPD) holds open houses at the various precincts each year as part of police week. While the activities can vary from one open house to another, the most important thing remains the same at all of them – the opportunity for community neighbors and police officers being able to get to know each other better.
The Police Week Open House at our Northside MPD 4th Precinct is: Fourth Precinct Open House, Thursday, May 16 from 3-7 p.m., 1925 Plymouth Ave. There’s not one at the SOC this year, but last year instead of doing an open house, MPD did a BBQ at the SOC later in the summer. I’m hoping that’s the case again this year.
There will also be open house events at these other MPD precincts: Fifth Precinct, Monday, May 13 4-6 p.m., 3101 Nicollet Ave S.; First/Third Precinct (they are combined this year), Tuesday, May 14, 11 a.m.-2 p.m.; and Second Precinct, Tuesday, May 14 4-7 p.m., 1911 Central Ave NE.
