Capri Glee!, the Gala, and More!
Written by Mike Mullen
Brace yourself for a lousy day. On April 15 the Capri has no events scheduled — and what’s worse, your taxes are due. There is good news for the rest of the month though: You have almost a dozen opportunities to be entertained, meet neighbors and connect with your community at the Capri.
The Legends @ the Capri series returns this month with “Jennifer Grimm Sings Judy Garland.” The local vocalist’s versions of the Minnesota native’s classics impressed even Garland’s estate: Grimm was booked to sing at the Judy Garland Museum for a centennial concert honoring the Wizard of Oz icon. Local artist and photographer Andrea Canter describes the show as “way beyond the rainbow with a stellar cast of area musicians.” Showtime is 7 p.m. April 6, and 3 p.m. April 7. Tickets $25 or $30 at the door; buy online at capri.simplextix.com.
Celebrate 70 years PCYC’s service to the community on Saturday, April 27, 5-9 p.m., during the 2nd Annual PCYC Gala @ the Capri. Join emcee Bisi Onile Ere of Fox 9 and other celebrants for auctions (silent and not), a variety of delectable food options, an awards ceremony honoring Walter “QBear” Banks and Anne and Jim Long, and special performances by Summer Camp Capri scholars Sara Jefferson and Imani Everett.
This is a great opportunity to show your support for PCYC and the Capri! Tickets are available in individual, couples, or 8-pack-set options. Buy tickets, sign up to volunteer and learn more about sponsorship options at pcyc-mpls.org.
Rehearsals for the celebrated Capri Glee! choir are in full swing, and all the singers’ hard work comes to fruition with their 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 16 concert on the Capri stage. Director J.D. Steele and his brother Fred Steele will lead this massive cast of glee-full vocalists. One singer recently noted that the experience is “very life-giving, which is so important right now.” Concert tickets are free with registration through Eventbrite; registration opens April 1.
At Camp Capri S3, our guest artist, Kelley Pribyl, will guide middle school scholars on an artful journey of creation and collaboration; event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 20. It’s free, and lunch – and a lot of fun – will be served. Registration required at thecapri.org. Artist Briauna “BriiNoir” Williams is on tap to guide our scholars on Saturday, May 18.
In partner events this month, The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra (SPCO) retakes the Capri stage at 7 p.m. on Friday, May 3 for an “Afro-Cuban Concerto” from Valerie Coleman, the SPCO’s latest Sandbox Composer-in-Residence. This series of interconnected pieces is a part of SPCO’s “express concert” series, which means about 75 minutes of music with no intermission. Tickets are free for Northsiders (reservations are required at thespco.org – enter your zipcode as the promo code) and children; $15 for non-Northside adults. More info at thespco.org.
Capri partner, the MSP Film Society, is once again bringing the Minneapolis St. Paul International Film Festival (MSPIFF) to the Capri! With more than 200 films screening across the Twin Cities, MSPIFF is the largest exhibition of world cinema in the Midwest. Capri screenings of MSPIFF entries will take place on Sunday April 14, and Friday, Saturday and Sunday on April 19-21. Find times, dates and details at mspfilm.org and thecapri.org.
Finally, All Things Possible Theatrical and Arts Group (ATPTAG) will screen their film, Growing Up Hard: The Prodigal, a modern reimagining of the Biblical parable, on April 13. This Capri rental features a red carpet reception from 3-3:50 p.m.; the film runs 3:55-5:10 p.m.; and film-goers can meet the cast from 5:30-6 p.m. Tickets $30, available at capri.simpletix.com.
The Capri is located at 2027 W. Broadway. For details and ticket info visit thecapri.org.
