Beat the mid-winter blues @ the Capri

Winter weather took its time to arrive, but arrive it did. Don’t let lower temperatures lower your spirits. The Capri’s calendar has plenty of highlights to look forward to, with events that will warm your heart and soul.

It all starts the first weekend of February with Souled Out, the latest in the Legends @ the Capri concert series, featuring the Capri debut of Co-MingL. The newly minted trio, starring local singers g’Beau, Will Wesley and Kelz, will perform soul standards by the Temptations, Otis Redding, James Brown, Sam Cooke and more, together with a 7-piece back-up band. First show at 7 p.m. Saturday, February 3, and Sunday matinee at 3p.m. February 4. Tickets $25 or $30 at the door; buy at capri.simplextix.com.

If you miss warm weather days at the ballpark, check out First Thursday Films @ the Capri, which this month features The League, an in-depth chronicle of the rise of Black baseball in the first half of the 20th Century. The documentary features interviews and research on all facets of the game, including Negro Leagues owners and on-field legends like Satchel Paige, Jackie Robinson and Willie Mays.

The film screens on February 1, at 7 p.m. After the movie, director Sam Pollard joins MSP Film programmer Craig Laurence Rice for a discussion. And be sure to save the date for the next concert in the Legends @ the Capri series. Jennifer Sings Judy Garland showcases Twin Cities vocalist Jennifer Grimm performing her renowned renditions of classics originally sung by a Minnesota native and Hollywood icon. At Camp Capri S3, talented teaching artists guide middle school scholars through

the wonderful world of the arts, sparking all sorts of creative interests along the

way. This month, youth in grades 5 – 8 are invited to attend Camp Capri from

10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, February 17. It’s free, and lunch – and a lot of

fun – will be served. Registration required at thecapri.org.

An Elders Tribute, a Capri rental event organized by the Community Legacies team, honors lives of wisdom and service. The evening includes a dinner, award ceremony, guest speaker Senator Bobby Joe Champion, and a performance by the Sounds of Blackness choir. In March, enjoy a night of music, family and Irish traditions at the Screaming Orphans’ Celebrate St. Patrick’s Month concert. Through three decades of touring and recording, this celebrated quartet of Irish sisters has established a sound that weds traditional Celtic folk music with modern pop sounds.
