Starting on a high note at the Capri

Sing and Dance Your Way Into 2024

Written By Mike Mullen

The holidays have come and gone, and we hope you got, gave, and ate everything you wanted to close out 2023. Now it’s time to figure out how you want to start the new year. Consider a resolution to take advantage of the entertainment and connect with your community at the Capri.

Keep your calendar clear for the next in our Legends @ the Capri concert series with Souled Out, a tribute to legendary voices in American soul by Co-Mingl, a new collaboration between g’Beau, Will Wesley, and Kelz. Join this local trio for their take on classics by the Temptations, Otis Redding, James Brown, Sam Cooke and more, at 7 p.m. Saturday, February 3, and 3 p.m. Sunday, February 4. Tickets are $25 or $30 at the door; buy online at capri.simplextix.

If you can’t wait that long for your soul music fix, come to First Thursday Films @ the Capri at 7 p.m. January 4 for an exploration of music, history, faith and family. Respect tells the story of Aretha Franklin’s rise from a preacher’s daughter to “The Queen of Soul.” Franklin herself hand-picked the casting of Jennifer Hudson, one of few living performers who could live up to the diva’s voice and style.

After the screening, MSP Film programmer Craig Laurence Rice leads a discussion with singer and motivational speaker Jearlyn Steele.

Entrance is free for Northside residents, and all others can find them for sale for $5 at mspfilm.org. Find the full lineup and schedule for First Thursday Films, presented in partnership with the MSP Film Society and the Minnesota Historical Society, at thecapri.org

This month’s Camp Capri S3 features award-winning local dance instructor Cierra Burnaugh, who will lead students on an interactive introduction to the movement arts on Saturday, January 20 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Students in grades 5-8 attend free; includes lunch. Registration required at thecapri.org.

The Capri is located at 2027 W. Broadway. For details and ticket info visit thecapri.org.
