Tour de Camden was more than a slow roll

Written by Deanna Averill

On a cool September 23 morning neighbors, young and old, gathered at Creekview Recreation Center before the annual Tour de Camden Slow Roll Bike Ride through North Minneapolis. Bikes were checked over for safety by Camden Cycles and riders were equipped with helmets courtesy of AAA. Shingle Creek Neighborhood Association provided t-shirts to commemorate the eve

After an introduction from Major Taylor, who provided information about the route and road safety instructions, the riders were off for the casual 8.5 miles tour through North Minneapolis. Stops were made at the Victory Flag Pole where riders had a chance to explore the monument and learn the history of the 568 Hennepin Country neighbors who died during WWI.

After hydrating, riders were off to the most anticipated stop, Dancing Bear Chocolate. Joe Skifter, owner, spoke to the group about its humble beginnings, and welcomed riders to come in for artisan chocolates and confections. After their sweet tooths was satisfied, it was back on the bicycles to return to Creekview where the ride began.

Riders were welcomed back to the park with a BBQ lunch provided by the Camden Lions and music from our own local DJ Lance. Families enjoyed the afternoon at the playground and coloring the pathway with sidewalk chalk. It was a great day experienced by all.

We look forward to seeing everyone at next year’s Tour de Camden. If you would like to participate in the planning, contact Shingle Creek Neighborhood Association at mpls.scna@gmail.com or 612-524-9632. We appreciate hearing from you.
