Kick off your Fall arts season at the Capri

Be at the Capri this fall starting with a night out at the movies! The 8th season of First Thursday Films @ the Capri opens at 7 p.m. Thursday, September 7 with TILL, the true story of Mamie Till-Mobley’s relentless pursuit of justice for her 14-year-old son, Emmett Till, who was brutally lynched in 1955 while visiting his cousins in Mississippi. The film is directed by Chinonye Chukwu and stars Danielle Deadwyler and Jalyn Hall.

Viewers are encouraged, as always, to stay for the conversation after the film. These discussions are always very thoughtful and thought-provoking. James Curry, a producer, director, writer, editor and instructor at Augsburg University leads the conversation this month. Curry has been active in the film industry for over 25 years, working on numerous projects in Los Angeles and Minneapolis, ranging from trailers, commercials, PSA’s, epk’s and music videos, as well as broadcast productions for NBC, FOX and ABC. Tickets are $5, free to Northsiders, at mspfilm.org. The full ‘23-‘24 season of First Thursday films, presented in partnership with the MSP Film Society and the Minnesota Historical Society, is online at thecapri.org.

The Capri Glee! adult community choir starts rehearsals at 7 p.m. Tuesday, September 16, continues on Tuesdays through October 17, and closes with a rousing performance at the Capri on October 24. Led by J.D. Steele, with Fred Steele on piano, singing in this choir is an absolute delight. No experience necessary. All are welcome. And it’s free to participate, with registration required at thecapri.org.

This year’s sparkling array of Legends @ the Capri concerts begins with Hot Times at Zona’s Cabaret and Blues Joint, a fiery, feisty production featuring gospel, jazz, and blues music performed by the incomparable PaviElle French and Dennis Spears. Set in a southern backwoods juke joint that holds a reverent space for its Hammond B-3, some of the audience members will get to enjoy Zona’s seated onstage! Shows at 7 p.m. Saturday, September 23 and 3 p.m. Sunday, September 24. Tickets $25/$30 at the door at capri.simpletix.com. Season tickets for all five Legends shows are still available at simpletix as well.

Superb music keeps on comin’ when the Capri Presents:  NUNNABOVE, a multi-talented Twin Cities sibling band at 7:30 p.m. Friday, September 29. “We love music. We love performing. We are all about family, and music is our passion!” said Cadence, NUNNABOVE lead vocalist and bass guitarist. Tickets ($20) are available at capri.simpletix.com.
