Summer Camp Capri: An annual August Highlight and Delight

The halls of the Capri are alive with youthful singing, dancing, drumming, laughter and excitement, as the middle-school-age cast of Once On This Island JRprepares for performances at 5 p.m. Wednesday, August 8 and Thursday, August 9at the Capri.Directed by Capri Artistic Associate, Dennis Spears, and renowned Twin Cities theater artist, Greta Oglelsby, Once On This Island JR tells the story of Ti Moune, a peasant girl who rescues and falls in love with Daniel, a wealthy boy from the other side of her island. When Daniel is returned to his people, the fantastical gods who rule the island guide Ti Moune on a quest that tests the strength of her love against the powerful forces of prejudice, hatred and even death.

The performance is the culmination of the Capri’s free, five-week summer camp where scholars are immersed in arts learning, five days a week. “Summer Camp Capri is one of the highlights of the year for the Capri,” said James Scott, Director of the Capri. “The middle school-age performers always bring everything they’ve got to these productions, to the total delight of our audiences. Also just announced, The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra’s ’23-’24 Northside Concert Series at the Capri. For 14 years, this world-renowned orchestra has partnered with the Capri to bring extraordinary chamber music concerts to North Minneapolis. This season is no exception, beginning with Tchaikovsky’s Souvenir de Florence, at 7 p.m. on Friday, October 27. Corelli’sChristmas Concerto follows on Friday, December 1 at 7 p.m., and the series concludes on Friday, May 3 at 7 p.m. with Valerie Coleman’s Afro-Cuban Concerto. Ongoing opportunities to Be at the Capri include the rescheduled Capri Presents concert featuring NUNNABOVE at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, September 29. Tickets ($20) are available at capri.simpletix.com. Capri rental programs in August include the final, free concert in the Jazz at the Plaza seriespresented by Jazz Access and featuring The Ted Godbout Trio performing on the Capri Plaza from 6-8 p.m. on Wednesday, August 9.  Northside STEM is presenting a free, electricity-themed event with lunch provided, raffles for kids, and free electricity-themed t-shirts for all students from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday, August 5 in the Paradise at the Capri.  Register to participate at northsidestem.org.  And on Saturday and Sunday, August 12 and 13, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Big Psych presents The Big Psychedelic Symposium featuring speakers, workshops, food, local creators and more.
