Adopt a Drain makes neighborhoods safer

On June 25, North Minneapolis had one of those summer downpours that comes and goes, leaving a bit of a mess in its wake. As a drain adopter, I always check the gutter to make sure a there isn’t a pile of garbage clogging the drain. On that day, there was some tree debris that had piled up just before the drain, but the rainwater was still able to get to the drain.

Across the street is another drain which has not been adopted. The buildup of debris was blocking the gutter and the rainwater had no access to the drain. The water was almost over the curb. In time the water would have seeped through the blockage, but this could be a very different situation if it was a rare rainfall in January that would freeze over before draining. The west side of our street would have been a skating rink and a very dangerous situation.

It’s easy to adopt a drain in your neighborhood and it’s so beneficial to the residents and waterways. Volunteer 15 minutes, twice a month, for cleaner waterways and healthier communities. To learn more about this opportunity, check out https://mn.adopt-a-drain.org/.

I intend to adopt the drain across the street. I will need to have a conversation with the neighbor, as it’s difficult to clear a drain if a vehicle is parked over it. I know it will be a pleasant conversation, as it will benefit their parking situation during the winter as well as protecting the drivers on our street.
