Memories of May meanders of Henry High

The spirit of Spring opened many avenues for students to enjoy themselves on campus. Highlights included a trip to the Guthrie Theater to see Hamlet. Approximately 95 percent of Henry scholars chose to join the crowd following the inspiration of their English teachers, and especially Mr. Pelini who coordinated the event with Project Success. The culminating scenes of this famous play were met with cheers and shouts by the attendees.

The following day Supaman, a Native American hip-hop artist, brought the student body to their feet again as he shared the truth of history with his music and humor. He engaged the whole school auditorium as an entertainer and historian (visit youtube.com/watch?v=zACs7kyjCCU) Following the auditorium, Henry students and staff linked with neighbors at a community Pop-Out event in the parking lot. Free food was served by the Camden Lions and Henry Leos, a drumline performed as did folklorico dancers and musicians. Vendors from the Northside sold their wares and agencies shared their services. A track meet followed the Pop-Out.  The theme of this year’s prom of May 12, held at International Market Square, was “Out of This World.” May 19 was the 20th anniversary of the May Show @ Henry High in honor of Asian and Pacific Islanders Heritage Month. What a wonderful celebration of Spring!

The next issue of Camden News may feature a story of Henry’s track team and the coaches, including record breaker Coach Jeff Byrd. The 2023 track team had over 50 participants! And there may be the story of the Minnema couple, one coaches badminton and the other coaches’ boy’s volleyball.
