Cheerleading – There are 15 girls on the cheerleading squad led by two enthusiastic coaches,
Henry High alumni Raquel Woods and Ms. Martin and Captain Kalise Zackery.
Girls Basketball – Henry’s team beat North High School after 25 years of losing and hosted a
playoff game after 25 years. Coach Luckett has grown the squad from six players to three levels of teams.
Football – Had the best start in 40 years, 6 wins, 0 losses. Many team members participated in
year-long conditioning group at Henry creating fitness and comradery.
Girls Gymnastics – Two girls in gymnastics team have a 3.8 GPA (Grade Point Average of A)
Girls Hockey – A freshman, Maizy Ness, is on the citywide Varsity Hockey Team.
Nordic Ski Team – Teamed with Fair School.Juna Krikiva placed in the top 50 in the Sectionals.
Wrestling – Two girls are on the squad, one finished in Section 52A, the first girl to place in this
section as a female wrestler. Nakeisha Vang was named Mpls. Conference Women’s Wrestler of the Year. Jamesa Robinson, a 2021 Henry graduate, named a Women’s Junior College All-American, is now at Brewton-Parker College where she recently competed in the NAIA Women’s Wrestling National Championship earning All-American status. Longtime assistant coach Peter Yang, an alumnus of Henry, was in the news for his unselfish prepping of competitors from all Minneapolis schools, in addition to Henry’s two, for the state tournament.
Volleyball – Senior Molly Minnema got a scholarship to the University of Sioux Falls.
Softball – Henry, North, and Fair School play as a team. Lack of funding for MPS facilities is a
problem. Girls have to travel to Creekview for home games. A group in the city is organizing to deal with this.
Girls Soccer partners with two schools. Boys Soccer has varsity and junior varsity teams.
Baseball – Henry has the only baseball diamond of all Minneapolis Public Schools!
Girls Mountain Biking and Track and Field are additional popular sports at Henry.
Weight Training – Groups of women students participate in weight training and Women’s
Wellness as part of scheduled advisory classes.
25 students from Henry joined 400 metro students with disabilities at the Target Center for the
“Live Unified” event on March 14 in partnership with the Special Olympics.
The Henry Athletic Department received $500 from the Thielen Foundation
Athletic Director Lisa Dornacker credits the success of the program at Henry to staff dedication and presence, the people who are here at events sacrificing their time. She notes, “Students are using internal competitiveness to push themselves in the classroom as they do in their sport. There are high expectations to operate to the best of ability, academic and in every aspect of their lives. There is an athlete-wide spirit, a sense of belonging, of showing up, and supporting each other at Henry.”
Hoodies are being sold and worn by many students with the print SAME TEAM on them. One half of the proceeds will go to the team with the highest GPA at the end of the school year.
