The Personal History of David Copperfield re-imagines Charles Dickens’ classic story of a young orphan who triumphs over many obstacles, and gives it new life with a diverse ensemble cast of stage and screen actors from across the world, including Dev Patel as Copperfield, Hugh Laurie, Fisayo Akinade, Nikki Amuka-Bird and Tilda Swinton. “Blind casting has been used in theater for a long time, but this is one of the few times I’ve seen blind casting in a feature film,” said MSP Film Programmer Craig Laurence Rice. “It brings a much more exciting, enlivened experience to the film.”

Rolling Stone says this movie is “abound with an exuberant energy that honors Dickens without embalming him in the literary past. It’s irresistible.” See if you and others agree. Stay for the always-enlightening conversation after the film led by actor, director, educator and the Capri’s general manager, Kevin West, along with MSP Film’s Craig Laurence Rice.

First Thursday Films @ the Capri continues with the animated, Oscar award-winning Soul at 7 p.m. on Thursday, January 6. The conversation after the film will include special guest Kristin Solid, a St. Paul-based 3D animator and professor. She has animated and supervised on over 20 Hollywood feature films as well as games, ride films and commercials.

Topical and relevant in these turbulent times, First Thursday Films aims to create a space for dialogue and better understanding. Come for the movies. Stay for the conversation. More info: thecapri.org, mspfilm.org, mnhs.org.
