A taste of what’s to come, First Thursday Films

All preparations for moving First Thursday Films @ the Capri to North Community High School for the 2019-20 season are in the works, including an incredible season of films. The series will be presented at North High for one year, while the Capri is closed for expansion and renovation.

Here’s a quick preview of just a few of the movies you’ll see:

Love Them First: Lessons from Lucy Laney Elementary: With unprecedented access over the course of a year, this film follows the determination of charismatic Minneapolis school principal, Mauri Melander Friestleben, as she sets out to undo history. A “must see” for Northsiders.

Amazing Grace features Aretha Franklin as she records her gospel album Amazing Grace live at the New Temple Missionary Baptist Church in Los Angeles in 1972.

Do the Right Thing: Spike Lee’s highly acclaimed film that follows a Brooklyn neighborhood’s simmering racial tension, culminating in tragedy on a hot summer day.

Rafiki: The story of friendship and tender love that grows between two young women amidst family and political pressures around LGBT rights in Kenya.

The full First Thursday season will be announced in July and tickets will be available in advance at mspfilm.org. North Community High School is located at 1500 James Avenue N. Films will be screened in the main auditorium.

The series is presented by the Film Society of Minneapolis St. Paul (MSP Film) in partnership with the Capri Theater and the Minnesota Historical Society.
