38th Annual Minneapolis St. Paul International Film Festival Titles screening at the Capri Theater

The Film Society of Minneapolis St. Paul will screen 14 outstanding films at the Capri Theater, 2027 West Broadway, as part of the 2019 Minneapolis St. Paul International Film Festival (MSPIFF). MSPIFF brings bold, exciting and moving works by emerging and veteran filmmakers to the Twin Cities April 4-20, presenting a carefully curated selection of 250+ new films representing some 100 cultures and countries and welcoming many guests from around the world each year.

Screenings at the Capri will be held on April 5, 6, 11, 12, 13, 14, 18 and 19. Showtime for each film is listed below. Tickets are $15 general public, $11 Film Society Members, and $8 youth (25 and under) and students w/ID (box office only).

 

MSPIFF Films at the Capri Theater

Over There, Friday, 4/5 at 7 p.m. In this suspenseful wartime drama set during World War I, a band of American soldiers are directed to venture behind enemy lines. Their mission is to rescue a platoon of missing soldiers. Directed by Steven Luke. USA. 2019.

Personal Statement, Saturday, 4/6 at 4 p.m. Director Juliane Dressner invited! During their senior year of high school, students Christine, Enoch and Karoline work to finish their college applications while also serving as peer mentors to fellow students facing an uphill battle to achieve their dreams. Personal Statement is their story. Directed by Juliane Dressner, Edwin Martinez. USA. 2018. English.

Miles Davis: Birth of the Cool, Saturday, 4/6 at 6:30 p.m. Stanley Nelson’s masterful documentary on Jazz musician Miles Davis is far more than a history lesson. The Birth Of Cool explores Davis’ relationships, influences, personal struggles and triumphs to offer a vivid picture into the life of a legend. Directed by Stanley Nelson. USA. 2019. English.

Tazzeka, Thursday, 4/11 at 7 p.m. Set in the Moroccan village of Tazzeka, Jean-Phillipe Gaud’s feature debut follows Elias, who studied Moroccan cuisine under the guidance of his grandmother. Now as an adult, Elias ventures to Paris with dreams of becoming a chief. Directed by Jean-Philippe Gaud. France, Morocco. 2018. French, Arabic w/English subtitles.

Laila at the Bridge, Friday, 4/12 at 7 p.m. Director Elizabeth Mirzaei invited! Screening with short documentary The Dispossessed. The story of Laila Haidari is brought to the screen in this riveting documentary from Elizabeth and Gulistan Mirzaei. Having endured a cruel upbringing and a child marriage, Laila now leads the charge against another threat–the heroin addiction crisis facing Afghanistan. Directed by Elizabeth Mirzaei, Gulistan Mirzaei. Canada, Afghanistan. 2018. Dari, Pushto, Persian w/English subtitles, English.

The Scoundrels, Friday, 4/12 at 9:30 p.m. Disgraced basketball player Ray finds himself caught in the web of an infamous car thief called the Raincoat Robber. Soon after, Ray is forced to go on the run when he is marked as suspect in the Raincoat Robber’s latest heist. Directed by Hung Tzu-Hsuan. Taiwan. 2018. Chinese (Mandarin) w/English subtitles.

Love Them First: Lessons from Lucy Laney Elementary School, Saturday, 4/13 at 3 p.m. Directors Lindsey Seavert and Ben Garvin to attend! Toni Morrison: The Pieces I Am, Saturday, 4/13 at 5:45 p.m. From acclaimed photographer and director Timothy Greenfield-Sanders comes a groundbreaking profile of the equally legendary author Toni Morrison. Featuring interviews from Morrison, Oprah Winfrey and Viola Davis. USA. 2019.

This is not Berlin (Esto no es Berlin), Saturday, 4/13 at 8:45 p.m. A coming-of-age set in 1986, Mexico City, This Is Not Berlin focuses on Carlos, a mild-mannered youth who becomes immersed in the punk scene and other subcultures of the city. Directed by Hari Sama. Mexico. 2019. Spanish w/English subtitles.

Always in Season, Sunday, 4/14 at 2 p.m. When Claudia Lacy’s beloved son Lennon is found hanging from a swing set in rural Bladenboro, North Carolina, she sets out to disprove the questionable determination by local authorities that Lennon’s death is a suicide. Winner, Special Sundance Jury Award for Moral Urgency. Directed by Jacqueline Olive. 2018.

Fig Tree, Sunday, 4/14 at 4:30 p.m. Addis Ababa, 1989: a teen girl experiences a harrowing coming of age. Sixteen-year-old Mina’s Jewish family is planning to flee war-torn Ethiopia for Israel. But this plan leaves out the person Mina loves most: Eli, her Christian boyfriend. Directed by Aäläm-Wärqe Davidian. Ethiopia, Israel, Germany, France. 2018. Amharic w/English subtitles.

Perfect Strangers (Perfectos Desconocidos), Thursday, 4/18 at 7 p.m. A seemingly harmless game turns a dinner party into a night of hilarious and startling revelations in Manolo Caro’s Perfect Strangers. Most long-time friends, the guests’ relationships are tested when the game reveals that the truth may be a matter of perspective. Directed by Manolo Caro. Mexico. 2018. Spanish w/English subtitles.

Shadow, Friday, 4/19 at 7 p.m. A Chinese period film from director Zhang Yimou, Shadow follows a calculating General who seeks to gain the upper hand over a rival kingdom using any means necessary, even if the plot involves dopplegangers, kings and his own wife. Directed by Zhang Yimou. China. 2018. Chinese (Mandarin) w/English subtitles.

X – The eXploited (X – A rendszerből törölve), Friday, 4/19 at 9:30 p.m. This intense and stylish crime drama shows how the unsettled heritage of the communist past still haunts Hungary. In present-day Budapest, talented investigative detective Éva must overcome her panic attacks in order to save her country – and herself. Directed by Károly Ujj Mészáros. Hungary. 2018. Hungarian w/English subtitles.
