SPCO Chamber Music Series presents Late Romantics

The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra (SPCO) opens its ninth Chamber Music Series @ the Capri with Late Romantics, featuring the two newest members of the orchestra, Sang Yoon Kim, Principal Clarinet and James Ferree, Principal Horn. The concert begins at 7 p.m. Friday, October 5 at the Capri, 2027 West Broadway. Free tickets are available on a first-come, first served basis; register for tickets at thecapritheater.org or call the SPCO box office at 651-291-1144.

“SPCO has been an exemplary partner with us for nine years,” said Capri Director James Scott. “We welcome the musicians back for this ninth season, and invite everyone to come hear the extraordinary music they bring to this treasured theater in our community.”

Both pieces on the program beautifully feature winds, strings and piano in combination, beginning with Eight Pieces for Clarinet, Viola and Piano, by Max Bruch. Bruch’s eight pieces, written in 1908 for his son Max Felix, are richly nostalgic and autumnal in tone. The second piece on the program is Hungarian composer Ernö Dohnányi’s Sextet in C for Clarinet, Horn, Violin, Viola, Cello and Piano. The piece, which has been described as “beautiful and elegant” and “a master work by a major composer,” features movements that flow directly from their 19th Century roots as well as tinges of the harmonic language of the 20th Century.

Two other chamber music concerts are scheduled at the Capri this season: Familial Music, a program about family, at 7 p.m. on March 22, 2019 and Modern Renaissance, featuring SPCO musicians as composers and arrangers, at 7 p.m. on Friday, May 10.

Season tickets are still available for all three concerts at the Capri (guaranteed general admission seating) for $30. Individual tickets may also be purchased for $15 (guaranteed, general seating admission) at thespco.org or call the SPCO box office at 651-291-1144.
