The City of Minneapolis encourages all eligible voters to participate in the Tuesday, August 9 primary election. Polls will be open 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. You are eligible to vote if you are a U.S. citizen at least 18 years old who has resided in Minnesota for at least 20 days before the election. If you have moved or changed your name since you last voted you must re-register.
If you missed the July 19 deadline to pre-register, you may still be able to vote. Minnesota is one of several states with election day registration. You may register at the polls on election day by providing one of the forms of identification required by Minnesota law, see vote.minneapolismn.gov. Allow extra time at the polls to register.
Now through August 8, you may cast your ballot at the Early Vote Center at 217 S. Third St. Hours throughout the absentee voting period are 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday, and on Saturday, and August 6, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
You can vote early; no reason is needed. Early in-person voting is convenient. It especially helps voters who need special accommodations, such as language support, that the extra time, attention and onsite resources of early in-person voting afford more readily than the polls might on election day.
You can also vote early by mail. Allow enough time to complete the process by mail; it can take longer than seven days. Absentee ballot applications are available at vote.minneapolismn.gov/voters/absentee and may be submitted anytime throughout the year.
Look at a sample ballot before voting; even bring it with to refer to when you go to vote. Find your sample ballot at vote.minneapolismn.gov/voters/ballot.
State law allows you to bring materials into the polls to help complete your ballot — and the sample ballot is the single, best tool available for this purpose. By downloading and printing your sample ballot (which are customized to specific ward and precinct), you can practice marking your ballot. You can bring this marked-up sample ballot as a reference to the voting booth when completing the official ballot. This is the best way to reduce the time spent waiting in lines.
