McKinley joins forces with new neighborhood cafe

McKinley Community, a neighborhood nonprofit looking to build new capacity, is now leasing space to Serendripity Spot, a community coffee shop and café opening in early August. This collaboration represents a burgeoning partnership based upon each entity maintaining its own niche in the local food movement while blending together their like-minded missions to give people easier and greater access to healthy food and deeper community engagement through enriched discussion, education, and citizen action.

Located at 3300 Lyndale N., Serendripity Spot will offer coffee drinks, light bites, and conversation six days per week from 6:30 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday-Thursday, and from 7 a.m.-3 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. The market-style menu will be created daily with produce from McKinley Community’s Urban Farm and Strong Side Terra Farma, along with ingredients from local vendors and co-ops. Serendripity Spot will offer a 5 percent discount on menu items to McKinley residents as well as to people who travel to the coffee shop by foot, bike or bus from outside the area.

Serendripity Spot is committed to conserving resources and believes in cultivating an ethic of durability that benefits people and our planet. As such, Serendripity Spot supplies locally and does not rely on fossil fuels for transportation of people or menu components, and only returnable, refillable containers will be used for food, drinks and ingredients. These conscientious choices intentionally differ from a consumer culture driven by single-use and grab-and-go options, and Serendripity Spot presents people with a place to sit, sip and stay, or a way to enjoy a drink to-go without having to throw anything away as landfill waste or litter.

While attracting customers is important, Serendripity Spot is equally interested in being a hub where people are encouraged to create plans for neighborhood improvements, and its organizer will work within the partnership to give time, leadership and modest financial support to make the changes that people want to see happen.

We’re inviting community input on a beverage survey of flavor preferences and habits, visit http://goo.gl/forms/Beu0j3WOdzFNeFGi2.

Join us starting at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, August 2 for a preview of the location and an unveiling of the new look. At 6 p.m., there will be a community gathering followed by McKinley Community’s National Night Out and ice cream social until 8 p.m.
