First Thursday Films @ the Capri presents the multiple Academy Award-winning film 12 Years a Slave at 7 p.m. Thursday, July 7 at the Capri Theater, 2027 West Broadway. Tickets are $5; purchased in advance at mspfilm.org or at the door the night of the show.
Twelve Years a Slave is based on an incredible true story of one man’s fight for survival and freedom. In the pre-Civil War United States, Solomon Northup (played by Chiwetel Ejiofor), a free black man from upstate New York, is abducted and sold into slavery. Facing cruelty (personified by a malevolent slave owner, portrayed by Michael Fassbender), as well as unexpected kindnesses, Solomon struggles not only to stay alive, but to retain his dignity. In the 12th year of his unforgettable odyssey, Solomon’s chance meeting with a Canadian abolitionist (Brad Pitt) forever alters his life.
The film, directed by British artist and filmmaker, Steve McQueen, won Academy Awards for Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Supporting Actress in 2014. One of the producers of the films was Minneapolis native, Bill Pohlad.
Star Tribune film critic Colin Covert wrote, “12 Years a Slave is a stinging corrective, a film about plantation slavery as seen from inside the cage. It is not a rousing story of rebellion against bondage, but a somber account of enduring it. The film is both brutal to watch and stunning to contemplate, powerfully challenging audiences — particularly white audiences — to examine their consciences.”
First Thursday Films always concludes with a talk-back session after the movie. Given the complexity of this movie, it’s sure to be a rich and vigorous discussion – and a fine opportunity to listen to other’s perspectives and insights.
