Fresh Dressed, a fascinating chronicle of hip-hop, urban fashion, hustle and entrepreneurial brilliance, is next up for First Thursday Films @ the Capri, an exciting, new collaboration between the Film Society of Minneapolis St. Paul and the Capri Theater. Fresh Dressed screens at 7 p.m. on Thursday, January 7 at the Capri, 2027 West Broadway. Tickets are $5; purchase in advance at mspfilm.org or at the door.
“This is a story of extraordinary entrepreneurship at an urban level,” said Craig Rice, Film Society programmer for First Thursday Films. “It’s about talented young people who seized an opportunity to create incredibly successful businesses based not on any previous business model, but on their own culture and what they knew to be true and ‘fresh’.”
The film’s director Sacha Jenkins adds, “I had no idea all these things that myself and other kids in the neighborhood were doing would one day turn into this huge global industry.”
The film features lots of music, history, and interviews with rappers, designers and industry insiders, including Pharrell Williams, Damon Dash, Kanye West and others who add their own perspectives on this cultural phenomenon that brought oversized pants and graffiti-drenched jackets from the lower Eastside of Manhattan to high fashion’s catwalks and middle-America shopping malls.
The First Thursday Films series always includes time for good conversation at the conclusion of each film. Writer/reporter Will Wright will lead the discussion after Fresh Dressed.
